Netflix has given us Stranger Things, Bridgerton, Squid Game and enough series to keep our watchlists permanently unfinished.
But behind the scenes, one of the people responsible for shaping the streaming giant’s entertainment strategy is leaving.
Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s chief content officer, is departing the company after nearly a decade.
The announcement, made on October 15, comes only a day after Netflix confirmed plans to cut more than 1,000 jobs, making this a particularly significant week for the streaming platform.
Bajaria joined Netflix in 2016 and gradually became one of the most influential executives in the entertainment industry.
During her time at the company, Netflix expanded its international productions, increased its investment in original programming and introduced new forms of entertainment beyond traditional series and films.
That includes reality television, live events and sports programming.
In 2023, Bajaria was appointed chief content officer, placing her in charge of Netflix’s global entertainment lineup.
Now, former Disney executive Peter Rice is preparing to take over the position on October 26.
Rice previously held senior leadership roles at 20th Century Fox and Disney, overseeing major film and television operations.
Netflix says he will be responsible for its global content strategy, including scripted series, reality programming, films and live events.
The leadership change arrives as streaming platforms face growing pressure to attract viewers, manage costs and compete with increasingly fragmented entertainment habits.
For audiences, the most important question is what this means for the shows they love.
A new executive doesn’t automatically mean a completely different Netflix, but decisions made at this level can influence which projects receive funding, which productions are prioritized and what types of entertainment the platform pursues.
So while subscribers might not recognize Bajaria’s name, they have almost certainly watched something influenced by the entertainment strategy she helped build.
Netflix’s next chapter is beginning behind the camera.
