The Middle East is once again on the brink of a major escalation.
Just weeks after a fragile ceasefire…
The United States has launched a new wave of large-scale airstrikes against Iran, following attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategic maritime routes.
──────────
What happened?
According to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), three commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz were attacked by Iranian forces using missiles and drones.
Washington described the attacks as « unwarranted, dangerous and a clear violation » of the ceasefire agreement reached only weeks earlier.
──────────
In response…
The U.S. military launched what it called « powerful strikes » against military targets across southern Iran.
According to U.S. officials, more than 80 targets were hit, including:
• Air-defense systems
• Coastal radar installations
• Anti-ship missile sites
• Drone launch facilities
• Command-and-control centers
• Dozens of boats belonging to Iran’s Revolutionary Guard operating near the Strait of Hormuz.
──────────
Why is the Strait of Hormuz so important?
Because it’s one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
Roughly 20% of global oil shipments pass through this narrow waterway every day.
Any military escalation there immediately raises fears of disruptions to global energy supplies and international trade.
──────────
The economic impact was immediate.
Oil prices jumped shortly after news of the strikes broke, as traders feared further attacks on shipping routes.
Higher oil prices could eventually translate into more expensive fuel, transport and consumer goods around the world if tensions continue to rise.
──────────
Iran has strongly condemned the U.S. operation.
Tehran accused Washington of violating previous agreements and warned that it would respond to what it described as an act of aggression.
Iranian officials also insisted they would continue defending what they consider their rights in the Strait of Hormuz.
──────────
Diplomatic efforts have now stalled.
Negotiations between Washington and Tehran aimed at stabilizing the region have been suspended, while several countries have called for restraint to prevent the conflict from expanding into a broader regional war.

A single attack on commercial shipping has triggered another dangerous military confrontation… and with the Strait of Hormuz at the center of global energy supplies, the consequences could reach far beyond the Middle East.
