Gen Z is using AI to answer a very important question: What would I have looked like in the 1980s?
A new trend is taking over Instagram and X, with users uploading modern photos and using AI tools to transform themselves into full retro versions : from oversized hairstyles and vintage outfits to old-school photography, film grain and classic 1980s settings.
The trend has become so widespread that public figures have joined in too, with several sharing their own retro transformations. Some are even skipping AI altogether and posting their actual 1980s photos.
It’s nostalgia, but with a 2026 twist: instead of finding an old photo of yourself, you can just ask AI to invent the entire decade for you.
