Ubisoft is bringing another major franchise to the screen.

And it has just recruited one of Hollywood’s most unique actors.

Steve Buscemi has officially joined the cast of FX’s live-action Far Cry series, alongside Rob McElhenney and Lizzy Caplan. While his role remains a closely guarded secret, fans are already convinced he could become the franchise’s next unforgettable villain.

The casting feels like a natural fit.

Throughout his career, Buscemi has built a reputation for playing eccentric, unpredictable and psychologically complex characters in productions such as Fargo, Boardwalk Empire, Reservoir Dogs and The Big Lebowski.

Those qualities perfectly match the DNA of Far Cry, a franchise famous for its charismatic antagonists like Vaas Montenegro, Pagan Min, Joseph Seed and Antón Castillo.

The TV adaptation, however, won’t retell the games.

The series will adopt an anthology format, meaning each season will introduce a new location, new characters and a brand-new story inspired by the Far Cry universe rather than directly adapting any specific game.

Executive producer Noah Hawley, best known for Fargo and Alien: Earth, says the show will focus on a recurring Far Cry theme: ordinary people thrown into extreme situations where they gradually lose their humanity.

That’s why Buscemi’s role is generating so much speculation.

Some fans believe he’ll portray a completely original dictator or cult leader, while others imagine him as a mysterious ally whose true intentions slowly emerge. His ability to switch from humor to menace within seconds has made him one of Hollywood’s most unpredictable performers—exactly the type of character Far Cry fans have come to expect.

Ubisoft is also betting big on adaptations.

Following the success of series like Arcane, Fallout and The Last of Us, publishers increasingly see television as a way to expand their biggest gaming franchises beyond consoles.

With Noah Hawley leading the project and a growing cast of acclaimed actors, Far Cry is shaping up to be one of Ubisoft’s most ambitious live-action productions to date.

No release date has been announced yet, but one thing is already clear: if there’s one actor capable of delivering the kind of unforgettable, unsettling villain that defines Far Cry, Steve Buscemi might be the perfect choice.
