The cult anime franchise from the 1990s is returning through a new video game called Samurai Pizza Cats: Blast from the Past!, bringing the characters back roughly 35 years after the original series ended.
The game is a 2D action adventure that lets players switch between different characters during battles.
But this is not simply an old franchise being turned into a random game and sent out into the world.
The developers are going surprisingly hard on making it actually feel like the original anime.
Brand new animated sequences have been created specifically for the game, with the goal of recreating the chaotic energy and visual style of the 1990s series.
There is even original talent involved.
Satoru Akahori, who worked on the anime, returned to write Japanese material for the project, while several familiar Japanese voice actors are also involved.
The comeback has an international side too.
A Dutch studio is developing the game while a UAE based company is handling worldwide publishing.
And apparently people really did miss these cats.
Early trailers have already attracted serious attention online, proving there is still an audience waiting for this extremely specific piece of anime history.
Some franchises return because fans spend years demanding them.
