PlayStation Is Going All-Digital… and Sony Is Celebrating with Huge Store Discounts

The future of PlayStation is becoming increasingly digital.

Just days after confirming that new PlayStation games will stop being released on physical discs from 2028, Sony has launched its « Super Summer Sale » on the PlayStation Store, offering discounts of up to 75% on hundreds of PS5 and PS4 games. Many observers see the promotion as another step toward encouraging players to build a fully digital game library.

The timing isn’t a coincidence.

Starting in January 2028, all new first-party PlayStation games will be sold digitally through the PlayStation Store or via download codes sold at retailers. Physical Blu-ray editions for new releases will disappear, marking the biggest shift in PlayStation’s history since the launch of the original console in 1994.

To help players make the transition, Sony’s Super Summer Sale includes major discounts on some of the biggest franchises in gaming.

Thousands of titles, expansions and DLCs are currently on sale, with savings reaching 75% on selected games. The promotion also includes PS VR2 titles and a wide range of independent games, making it one of the largest PlayStation Store sales of the year.

For Sony, the advantages of going digital are significant.

Digital distribution eliminates manufacturing and shipping costs, allows games to be available instantly worldwide and gives Sony greater control over pricing and promotions. It also strengthens the PlayStation ecosystem by encouraging players to purchase directly through the PlayStation Store instead of physical retailers.

But not everyone is convinced.

Many players worry about game preservation, the inability to resell digital purchases, and the fact that access to games depends entirely on the PlayStation Network. Others have even launched campaigns and boycotts against Sony, arguing that physical media remains essential for ownership and consumer choice. In several countries, legal challenges have already been filed following the announcement.

Whether you support the move or not, one thing is becoming clear.

The PlayStation of tomorrow will be overwhelmingly digital. And with massive promotions now encouraging players to expand their online libraries, Sony is preparing gamers for a future where downloading—not inserting a disc—becomes the new normal.
