One of eastern Morocco’s most recognizable traditional garments is returning to the spotlight, as Oujda prepares to host the ninth edition of the International Blouza Festival from November 5 to 8.
This year’s event is dedicated to celebrating the blouza oujdia, a garment closely associated with the cultural identity of Oujda and the Oriental region, while highlighting the artisans and designers working to preserve its place in Moroccan fashion.
Organized by the Association Orientale pour le Développement, the festival takes place under a theme that presents the blouza as a connection between Morocco’s different regions.
The programme combines fashion, craftsmanship and cultural activities, including a regional design competition that will reward new interpretations of the traditional garment.
Visitors can also discover exhibitions highlighting Moroccan heritage and artisanal techniques, while a women’s parade will showcase the haïk oujdi and other traditional outfits.
A major fashion presentation is planned for the festival’s closing celebration, bringing established designs together with contemporary interpretations of the blouza.
Beyond the visual appeal of the clothing, the event raises an important question about the future of traditional fashion.
As international trends continue to influence what younger generations wear, local designers are finding ways to reinterpret historical garments without losing the techniques and meanings that make them distinctive.
In Morocco, where fashion has long been connected to regional identity, weddings, family celebrations and craftsmanship, these conversations have become particularly relevant.
The festival also recognizes the artisans and cultural figures whose work keeps the tradition alive.
For Oujda, the celebration is an opportunity to present the blouza not only as an important part of the region’s past, but as a form of fashion that continues to evolve.
