That was the dream.
But something is changing.
New York is becoming just as important — and in some areas, it may already be pulling ahead.
Since mid-2025, New York and the San Francisco Bay Area have each added more than 20,000 jobs specifically linked to artificial intelligence.
But here’s the interesting part:
New York has a different advantage.
It’s not trying to beat Silicon Valley at its own game.
It’s building something different around finance, enterprise technology and AI.
Think about the companies based in New York.
Banks.
Investment firms.
Insurance companies.
Consulting giants.
Media companies.
Major corporations.
All of these businesses are now trying to integrate AI into their operations.
And that creates an enormous demand for people who understand both technology and business.
That’s where New York becomes extremely powerful.
Silicon Valley has traditionally been dominated by people building the technology.
New York has an enormous concentration of companies trying to use that technology to make money.
And AI is increasingly moving from the laboratory into the workplace.
Companies need engineers.
Data scientists.
AI researchers.
Product managers.
AI consultants.
Cybersecurity specialists.
People who can actually integrate AI into existing businesses.
And suddenly…
New York becomes a very attractive place to be.
But this doesn’t mean Silicon Valley is dead.
Far from it.
The Bay Area remains one of the world’s most important technology ecosystems, with enormous concentrations of AI companies, researchers, venture capital and startups.
The difference is that the American tech map is becoming less centralized.
And that’s actually great news for anyone trying to build a career.
Because the message isn’t:
« Silicon Valley is finished. »
It’s:
« You have more options now. »
New York.
San Francisco.
Seattle.
Austin.
Boston.
Miami.
And increasingly, other cities are building their own technology ecosystems.
For young Moroccans looking at international careers, that’s a pretty important shift.
Maybe you’ve always thought:
« If I want to work in AI, I have to go to Silicon Valley. »
Not anymore.
If your skills are in AI + finance, New York could be particularly interesting.
If you’re into enterprise software, consulting or business technology…
Again, New York makes sense.
If you’re building frontier AI models or working directly with the biggest AI research labs…
Silicon Valley and the Bay Area remain extremely powerful.
The point is that there isn’t one single road into tech anymore.
And that’s probably the biggest lesson here.
The future of technology isn’t going to belong to one city.
It’s going to belong to multiple ecosystems competing for the same talent.
And that competition is good for workers.
More companies.
More opportunities.
More specialized jobs.
More cities.
And potentially…
more ways for talented people to break into the industry.
So if you’re a young Moroccan dreaming about an international career in tech, don’t think:
« I need to get to Silicon Valley. »
Think:
« Where is my skillset most valuable? »
Because in the AI era…
The question isn’t just where the technology is being invented.
It’s also:
where companies are desperate to use it.
And right now…
New York is proving that Silicon Valley doesn’t have the American tech scene all to itself anymore.
