It’s August.
You’d expect one thing from Morocco:
Heat.
But this Tuesday…
Some parts of the country are getting a very different forecast.
The General Directorate of Meteorology, or DGM, is warning of thunderstorms and a risk of hail across parts of the Atlas, the Southeast and the Oriental, alongside strong wind gusts and continued heat in the Southeast.
So yes…
You can have blazing summer temperatures…
And a hailstorm…
In the same country, on the same day.
The most exposed areas are mainly the mountainous zones of the Atlas, parts of the Southeast, and the Oriental.
And if you’re travelling through these regions…
This isn’t just something to watch on Instagram.
Thunderstorms can develop quickly.
And when they do…
You can get several hazards at once:
Heavy rain.
Lightning.
Strong wind gusts.
And potentially hail.
The biggest danger for drivers?
A storm can transform road conditions incredibly quickly.
Visibility drops.
Water accumulates.
Hail can make the road slippery.
And in mountainous areas, sudden heavy rainfall can create localized flooding or dangerous runoff.
So if you’re heading toward the Atlas or Oriental today…
Don’t rely only on the weather you see when you leave.
Check the latest DGM bulletin before your trip.
And if a thunderstorm develops while you’re driving?
Slow down.
Increase your distance from other vehicles.
Avoid stopping under isolated trees.
And if conditions become severe, find a safe sheltered location rather than trying to push through the storm.
If you’re outside when lightning starts…
Get indoors if possible.
Don’t stay in exposed open areas just to film the storm.
Because yes…
The footage might look insane.
But getting struck by lightning isn’t worth the TikTok.
And there’s another interesting part to this story.
Morocco’s weather can produce extremely sharp contrasts because of the country’s geography.
Mountains.
Desert.
Atlantic influence.
Mediterranean influence.
All packed into one relatively small territory.
That can create very different weather conditions between regions…
Sometimes within just a few hours.

Oriental? Stay alert.
Southeast? Don’t forget the heat.
