MENA startups raised $1.1 billion. Morocco got $100k

The MENA startup scene had a very big September.

Morocco? Not so much.

Startups across the Middle East and North Africa raised around $1.1 billion in September 2026.

Moroccan startups, meanwhile, recorded only $100,000 from one disclosed deal during the same month.

That gap is hard to ignore.

And no, it does not mean Moroccan startups are doing nothing.

It means that, in that specific month, the publicly disclosed investment flowing into Morocco was tiny compared with the wider region.

For young founders, that raises a pretty important question:

Why is it still so difficult to raise serious startup money here?

Morocco has spent years trying to build a stronger startup ecosystem, with incubators, accelerators, fintech initiatives and public programmes supporting entrepreneurs.

There is talent. There are ideas. There are founders building products.

But getting from “cool startup” to “company that can actually scale” usually requires capital.

And that is where things get harder.

The interesting part is that Morocco has attracted much more investment over a longer period through programmes like InnovInvest, which has helped mobilize tens of millions of dollars in private capital.

So the ecosystem is not dead.

Far from it.

But one weak month can still show how uneven funding is.

Startups do not grow on motivation alone.

They need money for teams, technology, marketing and expansion.

So when MENA raises more than a billion dollars in one month and Morocco gets $100K, the question is not whether Moroccan founders have ideas.

It is whether enough investors are willing to bet on them.
