Kimi Antonelli makes F1 history as the youngest World Champion ever

At just 20 years old, Kimi Antonelli has achieved what many Formula 1 drivers spend their entire careers chasing. The Italian Mercedes driver has officially become the youngest world champion in the sport’s history, securing the 2026 title following the Mexico City Grand Prix on Sunday, November 1.

Antonelli finished third behind race winner Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, but the podium result was enough to confirm his championship victory with four races still remaining in the season.

At 20 years and 68 days old, he broke the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who became world champion in 2010 at the age of 23.

A historic moment for Italian motorsport.

Antonelli’s victory also marks a significant moment for Italy, which had not produced a Formula 1 world champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.

The achievement is particularly remarkable considering that Antonelli is only in his second season competing at the highest level of motorsport.

His rapid rise began in karting before progressing through junior racing categories, where his performances attracted the attention of Mercedes.

Throughout the 2026 season, Antonelli established himself as a serious championship contender, collecting nine Grand Prix victories and consistently finishing among the leading drivers.

His success represents a major milestone for Mercedes and a new chapter in Formula 1’s changing generation of talent.

An emotional finish in Mexico.

Despite the pressure surrounding the championship, Antonelli delivered a controlled performance in Mexico City, navigating a race interrupted by accidents and safety-car periods.

The final laps proved particularly emotional. Antonelli later revealed that he had begun crying before crossing the finish line, making it difficult to see clearly as he approached the moment he had dreamed of since childhood.

His championship victory was celebrated alongside Verstappen and Hamilton on the podium, bringing together three generations of Formula 1 talent.

With four races still remaining, Antonelli has already secured his place in motorsport history.

And at an age when many drivers are still working toward their Formula 1 debut, he has become the youngest person ever to win its most prestigious title.
