iPhone and Android users can finally send end-to-end encrypted texts

tech

A major change is coming to mobile messaging.

For the first time,

text messages exchanged between iPhone and Android users

can now support end-to-end encryption through RCS messaging.

Starting on Monday, May 11, 2026,

the rollout of the encrypted messaging feature in beta

will begin for users running the latest versions

of iOS and Android.

Until now,

messages between iPhones and Android devices

did not benefit from the same level of privacy protection,

even though Apple and Google already offered encryption

within their own messaging ecosystems.

This update is powered by RCS,

the next-generation messaging standard designed to replace SMS,

with features such as

high-quality media sharing,

typing indicators,

and read receipts.

The addition of end-to-end encryption means

that only the sender and the recipient

can access the content of the messages exchanged.

In summary:

Apple and Android are taking a major step toward secure

cross-platform messaging,

bringing encrypted conversations to users

through RCS technology.
