After more than 30 years…
Ghost in the Shell is returning with a brand-new anime.
But unlike previous adaptations, this isn’t simply a remake of the iconic 1995 movie.
It’s a fresh adaptation that goes back to the original manga by Masamune Shirow.
──────────
The biggest difference?
The story.
The legendary 1995 film focused on philosophy, identity and existential questions, creating a slow, atmospheric cyberpunk masterpiece.
The 2026 series expands the universe by adapting story arcs and characters that were never included in the original film, making it much closer to Shirow’s manga.

The visual style has also changed dramatically.
The original movie, produced by Production I.G, became famous for its realistic animation, dark atmosphere and cinematic direction.
The new anime is produced by Science SARU, bringing a more fluid, expressive and energetic animation style while preserving the futuristic cyberpunk world fans know and love.
──────────
Another major difference…
The creative philosophy.
Director Mokochan recently confirmed that no generative AI was used during production.
Every character, background and animation sequence was created through traditional artistic methods, a decision that received strong praise from anime fans.
──────────
The release format is changing too.
Instead of a feature-length movie, The Ghost in the Shell arrives as a weekly television series on Prime Video, giving the story more time to explore its characters, investigations and political themes in greater depth.
──────────
Yet one thing remains unchanged.
The questions that made Ghost in the Shell legendary are still at the heart of the story.
What makes us human?
Can artificial intelligence develop consciousness?
And where does the soul end… when the body becomes entirely machine?
Those themes are arguably more relevant in 2026 than they were in 1995.

This isn’t a simple remake of a classic… it’s a return to the original vision that inspired one of the most influential sci-fi franchises ever created.
