CHARACTER.AI went bankrupt. Now Disney is hiring most of its team

Imagine building a platform where millions of people can talk to fictional characters, celebrities and AI personalities, only for the company behind it to end up in bankruptcy.

Now imagine Disney entering the picture.

That’s the unexpected situation surrounding Character.AI, the chatbot platform that became popular for letting users have conversations with AI-generated personalities.

Following the company’s Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing, Disney has agreed to offer jobs to at least 60 Character.AI employees, representing the majority of its workforce.

New details reported on October 18 reveal that the employment arrangement could involve approximately $60 million in annual compensation.

And the connection between the two companies is already growing.

Character.AI’s former CEO, Karandeep Anand, recently became Disney’s first chief technology officer, while the entertainment company has also agreed to a proposed $20 million deal involving a license to certain Character.AI assets.

But there’s an important detail: the bankruptcy sale process is not yet final.

Disney’s proposal forms part of a process that allows competing offers, meaning another company could potentially present a different deal.

Character.AI’s financial troubles come despite its large and active user base.

The company has faced significant operating costs, legal challenges and concerns about the safety of AI companions, especially when younger people use them.

Those issues have become part of a wider conversation about the responsibilities of companies developing conversational AI.

Meanwhile, Disney has decades of experience creating fictional worlds and characters people form emotional connections with.

That makes its growing interest in AI talent particularly noteworthy.

For now, Disney’s involvement doesn’t mean users will suddenly be able to chat with every Disney character through Character.AI.

But it does show how valuable AI expertise has become to the entertainment industry.

Even when an AI startup struggles to survive, the technology and people behind it can remain highly attractive.
