Anthropic says Claude may require users to show ID

tech

Anthropic is preparing to introduce a policy where some Claude AI users may be asked to verify their identity

by submitting government-issued documents such as a passport or driver’s license, according to an updated privacy policy.

─────────

The verification process would only apply in specific cases, mainly when an account is flagged for potential

abuse, fraud, or policy violations, rather than all users being affected by default.

─────────

When triggered, users could be required to upload an ID document and, in some cases, complete a

selfie or video check, which may also involve biometric processing for identity confirmation.

─────────

Anthropic states that this measure is part of its effort to improve platform security and account appeals,

allowing users who are flagged or restricted to prove their identity instead of being permanently banned.

─────────

The company also says this system will be handled through a third-party verification provider and is intended

to comply with safety, fraud prevention, and regulatory requirements.

─────────

One thing is clear:

AI platforms are increasingly moving toward stricter identity and safety controls, and Claude’s

potential ID requirement reflects this wider industry trend.
