What happens when the story you’ve been told about your family turns out to have missing pieces?
That’s the question at the centre of L’Héritier des secrets, the new Moroccan-Canadian drama directed by Mohamed Nadif, which arrives in Moroccan cinemas today.
The film follows Farid, a man who lost his father when he was only four years old.
Growing up without him has left questions that never completely disappeared. Years later, Farid begins searching for answers about his father’s absence, confronting family memories, hidden truths and the complicated relationships that shaped his childhood.
Adapted from a novel by Moroccan writer Fatiha Morchid, the film explores themes of identity, belonging and the consequences of keeping secrets within a family.
Actor Younes Bouab leads the cast, alongside Mounia Zahzam, Nisrin Erradi, Mehdi Bahmad and Nadia Kounda.
Rather than approaching family relationships through a conventional love story or comedy, L’Héritier des secrets focuses on the emotional weight of unanswered questions.
Farid’s search becomes more than an investigation into his father’s disappearance. It is also an attempt to understand his own identity and the choices made by people close to him.
The Moroccan-Canadian production runs for approximately 109 minutes and features dialogue in French and Moroccan Arabic.
The film arrives at a time when Moroccan filmmakers continue exploring family dynamics, generational relationships and personal identity through contemporary cinema.
For audiences, its central themes may feel familiar. Most families have stories that are retold over the years, and sometimes the things left unsaid can become as important as the things people remember.
With L’Héritier des secrets, those silences become the starting point for a story about a son trying to understand his past.
