Netflix is expanding its animated catalogue with Bass X Machina, a new series scheduled to premiere on November 3 that combines Western storytelling with science fiction, supernatural elements and a distinctly darker atmosphere.

Set in a lawless world shaped by unfamiliar technology and dangerous forces, the series follows a father whose determination to protect his family brings him into conflict with the society around him.

At the center of the story is a familiar moral dilemma: how far can someone go in the pursuit of justice before their actions begin to threaten the people they are trying to protect?

The series draws inspiration from the visual language of classic Westerns, incorporating elements of steampunk, a genre that imagines advanced or unusual machinery within settings influenced by an earlier industrial age.

The combination creates a world in which traditional frontier landscapes exist alongside mechanical technology and supernatural dangers.

Bass X Machina is produced by Studio Mir, the South Korean animation studio known for its involvement in several internationally successful animated productions.

Its creative team includes Brian Tyree Henry, LeSean Thomas, Jennifer Wiley-Moxley and Chad Handley, with an English-language voice cast featuring Henry, Tati Gabrielle and Janelle Monáe.

The project reflects the continuing expansion of adult-oriented animated storytelling, particularly on streaming platforms where creators are increasingly experimenting with genre combinations and unconventional fictional worlds.

Rather than relying on familiar fantasy settings, Bass X Machina brings together the atmosphere of a Western, the visual possibilities of animation and the themes of a family drama.

Its unusual premise makes it one of Netflix’s more distinctive additions to the November release calendar, particularly for viewers interested in animation that moves beyond traditional genre boundaries.
