Tomatoes at 10 DH a kilo? Casa’s vegetable prices are getting out of hand

If you’ve been grocery shopping in Casablanca lately, you’ve probably noticed that filling a shopping bag is getting more expensive.

And now, vegetable prices are once again raising concerns among shoppers and market professionals.

Tomatoes are selling for around 10 dirhams per kilogram in some Casablanca markets, while several other everyday vegetables have also become more expensive.

For families already dealing with rising food costs, it’s another hit to the monthly budget.

How much are vegetables costing?

In Casablanca, tomatoes are currently selling for around 10 MAD per kilogram in some markets, reflecting the recent rise in vegetable prices across the city.

Potatoes and onions are around 4.50 to 6 MAD, while zucchini can reach 11 MAD.

Green beans have been reported at approximately 14 to 15 MAD, and peas at 15 to 16 MAD.

These are reported market prices, meaning the amount you actually pay can change depending on where and when you shop.

But why are prices going up?

Market professionals point to several factors.

One of them is the intense heat Morocco experienced in September, which damaged crops in agricultural regions, particularly Souss.

Seasonal changes have also affected supply, while production costs and export demand continue to put pressure on the market.

When less produce is available, prices can climb quickly, especially for vegetables people buy every week.

And who feels it the most?

For young Moroccans living independently, students managing limited budgets and families shopping for several people, these increases add up.

Ten dirhams for tomatoes might not sound dramatic on its own.

But combine it with more expensive meat, fish and other essentials, and the weekly grocery bill starts looking very different.

And that’s why the conversation isn’t only about tomatoes.

It’s about how expensive everyday life is becoming, even when you’re buying the basics.
