Morocco’s scientific community has something to celebrate, and this time the spotlight is on Meknes.
Nine researchers from Université Moulay Ismaïl have been included in the 2026 Stanford–Elsevier ranking of highly cited scientists.
The international ranking identifies researchers who stand out according to scientific citation indicators, placing them within the top 2% of researchers in their respective fields under the ranking’s methodology.
And yes, that’s an achievement worth talking about.
But what does appearing on this list actually mean?
It’s about the impact of their research.
Scientists don’t only conduct experiments, write papers and publish their results.
Their work also contributes to what other researchers discover.
When a scientific study is cited in another publication, it usually means that someone is referring to its findings, methods or contribution to a particular research field.
The Stanford–Elsevier ranking uses information from the Scopus scientific database and several citation-based indicators to evaluate that research influence.
The nine researchers recognized this year are affiliated with different establishments within Université Moulay Ismaïl.
Their inclusion highlights the scientific work being produced at the Moroccan university.
There’s also an important distinction: the ranking doesn’t mean these are the nine best scientists in Morocco, or that citations alone measure the quality of every research project.
It’s recognition based on a particular set of research-impact indicators.
Still, in a country where young people are frequently encouraged to pursue careers in engineering, medicine, technology and science, it’s encouraging to see Moroccan academic work receiving international attention.
And while scientific achievements don’t always generate the same headlines as football victories or music releases, they can have a lasting impact.
Because sometimes, putting Morocco on the map happens inside a laboratory rather than on a football pitch.
