For anyone who grew up playing Mass Effect, Dragon Age or Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, this is a difficult headline.
BioWare is shutting down.
After more than three decades of creating some of gaming’s most recognizable role-playing adventures, the studio confirmed on October 21 that it would be closing.
And there’s more disappointing news for fans.
Early development of the next Mass Effect game has officially ended.
The announcement comes as parent company Electronic Arts restructures its operations, shifting resources toward a smaller number of major projects.
According to reporting by Reuters and the Associated Press, approximately 400 jobs are being cut across EA, including around 50 at BioWare.
Th end of a gaming era.
BioWare wasn’t known for making ordinary action games.
It built its reputation around stories in which players could make decisions, develop relationships with characters and influence how entire adventures unfolded.
For many fans, Mass Effect wasn’t simply a science-fiction shooter.
It was a universe filled with characters they spent years getting to know.
And Dragon Age helped make fantasy role-playing games feel personal through dialogue, choices and relationships.
But BioWare had faced challenges in recent years.
Anthem, released in 2019, struggled to establish itself, while later projects received mixed reactions or failed to meet commercial expectations.
The closure also reflects wider uncertainty across the gaming industry, where restructuring, layoffs and canceled projects have affected developers of different sizes.
In its farewell message, BioWare thanked the players who had supported its worlds and characters over the years.
Other EA projects, including upcoming Star Wars Jedi and Marvel games, are continuing.
But for Mass Effect fans hoping to return to that universe in another BioWare game, the announcement brings a major disappointment.
After more than 30 years, one of gaming’s best-known storytelling studios is reaching its final chapter.
