Greta Gerwig has finally opened the door to Narnia.
The first trailer for The Magician’s Nephew is here, giving us our first real look at her version of C.S. Lewis’s fantasy world.
And one detail has already taken over the conversation:
Meryl Streep is voicing Aslan.
Yes. The lion.
Gerwig’s version also stars Emma Mackey, Daniel Craig and Carey Mulligan, and the film is set to arrive in cinemas before eventually heading to Netflix.
For anyone who grew up with the older Chronicles of Narnia films, this feels familiar but also very different.
The Magician’s Nephew is not another retelling of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.
It goes further back.
It explores how Narnia was created and how some of the world’s most important characters and objects came to exist in the first place.
Basically, it is the origin story.
And Gerwig is coming off Barbie, so expectations are ridiculous.
The question is whether she can take something that already has a huge nostalgic fanbase and make it feel new without losing what people loved about it.
The trailer suggests she is going big.
Fantasy. World-building. Huge landscapes.
And a lot of emotional weight.
It also gives Netflix one of its biggest upcoming family franchises.
For younger viewers, this could be their first real Narnia era.
For everyone else, it is nostalgia coming back in a much shinier package.
And somehow, Meryl Streep as a giant talking lion already feels completely normal.
