Miami Vice is coming back.
And the casting is doing a lot of the heavy lifting already.
Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler are leading the new film Miami Vice ’85, bringing the iconic crime world back with even more 1980s style, neon, speedboats and extremely expensive-looking sunglasses.
Jordan plays Ricardo Tubbs, while Butler takes on Sonny Crockett.
The film is being directed by Joseph Kosinski, the same filmmaker behind Top Gun: Maverick and F1, which basically tells you what kind of energy to expect.
Big visuals. Fast machines.
People looking cool while something very dangerous happens nearby.
The first images from filming have now been released, and they are leaning hard into the decade.
Sharp tailoring. Pastel tones. Classic Miami styling.
It looks expensive in exactly the way Miami Vice is supposed to.
For anyone who did not grow up with the original series, the franchise follows undercover detectives moving through Miami’s drug world while somehow maintaining incredible wardrobes.
Very realistic police work.
The new film is set in 1985, so instead of modernizing everything completely, it is going directly back into the era that made the original show iconic.
That is probably the smartest move.
Miami Vice was never only about crime.
It was also about music, clothes, cars and atmosphere.
Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler already understand the assignment visually.
Now we just need the movie to match the photos.
The film is currently scheduled for May 2028.
So yes, the wait is ridiculous.
At least the outfits have arrived early.
