We need to talk about what is happening at Zara.
Because somehow, $999 Zara now exists.
Designer John Galliano has teamed up with Zara for a special project called Re{form}, where existing Zara clothes are taken apart, redesigned and turned into completely new pieces.
Basically, Galliano was given Zara clothes and told to do his thing.
And he definitely did.
The collection is full of dramatic silhouettes, reconstructed dresses, oversized pieces and the kind of details you would normally expect from a designer runway rather than your usual Zara visit.
The prices are also very different from your usual Zara visit.
One chiffon dress costs around $999, while a faux fur coat reaches roughly $759.
Yes.
We are still talking about Zara.
Part of the idea behind Re{form} is to work with clothes that already exist instead of simply producing another completely new collection. Galliano takes those pieces and transforms them using the techniques and dramatic design language he is known for.
And apparently people are into it.
According to Vogue, around 41.5 percent of the wider online collection had already sold out early.
The collaboration also raises an obvious question.
Designer collaborations with high street brands usually give people a chance to buy into luxury fashion without paying full luxury prices.
But when a Zara dress starts approaching $1,000, where exactly is the line between high street and luxury anymore?
Whatever the answer is, people are buying it.
So apparently “I got it from Zara” can now require a much longer explanation.
