Marrakech already looks cinematic on a normal Tuesday.
For the next few days, it is making that official.
The Marrakech Short Film Festival begins September 25 and runs until September 30, bringing filmmakers, audiences and short films from around the world into the city for its sixth edition.
And we really mean around the world.
The festival received more than 400 submissions from over 90 countries across five continents.
But one of the coolest things about the festival is not simply what is being screened.
It is where people get to watch it.
Instead of keeping everything inside traditional cinemas, the festival uses Marrakech itself as part of the experience, bringing screenings and cultural programming into historic and public spaces around the city.
Suddenly, watching a short film becomes more than sitting in a dark room staring at a screen.
The city becomes part of the screening.
The festival is also giving Moroccan filmmakers an opportunity to connect with international directors, producers and other people working in cinema.
That matters because short films are often where new directors, writers, actors and cinematographers first get noticed before moving towards bigger projects.
For everyone else, there is another benefit.
You can finally watch something without spending 45 minutes scrolling through Netflix before deciding there is “nothing to watch.”
