First we had phone numbers.Then usernames.
Now X would like to introduce you to another number.
The platform has launched X Numbers, an optional feature inside XChat that gives users another way to connect without sharing their phone number or regular X username.
Instead, you can give someone a private numerical code.
They enter that code into XChat and can use it to contact you.The obvious reason is « privacy. »
Maybe you want someone to be able to message you without giving them your actual phone number. Maybe you do not want to send them directly to your public profile either.
X Numbers basically creates another layer between those two things.
But this is also part of a much bigger plan.
X has spent years trying to become more than the app you open to read three posts, accidentally enter an argument and suddenly realise it is 2 AM.
Messaging has become increasingly important to that vision.
Audio calls, video calls and private communication all move X closer to the “everything app” Elon Musk has talked about building.
And X Numbers fit directly into that idea.
Your account becomes less like a social media profile and more like an identity you can use across different services inside the platform.
Whether people actually want another number to remember is another question.
Apparently having an @ is no longer enough.
Now your X account needs a secret code too.
