Something big is happening inside Xbox.
Microsoft’s gaming division is reportedly going through another major restructuring, with studios being reorganized, teams potentially being merged and questions emerging about what happens next to some of Xbox’s biggest franchises.
And naturally, gamers are already spiraling.
The biggest conversation surrounds Halo, arguably the franchise most closely associated with Xbox itself. Reports around the restructuring suggest major changes could affect how the series is developed going forward, including deeper involvement from Activision.
Then there’s Ninja Theory, the studio behind Hellblade, whose future has also become part of the discussion.
For players, this isn’t simply boring corporate reshuffling.
Xbox has spent years buying some of the biggest companies in gaming, including Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. That created an enormous collection of studios and franchises under Microsoft ,but also left the company with the difficult job of figuring out how all those pieces actually fit together.
Every restructuring therefore raises the same uncomfortable question:
What happens to the games?
And Halo makes this particularly sensitive. We’re talking about a franchise that practically helped define the Xbox brand.
Changing who makes it, how it is made or where those developers sit inside Microsoft isn’t exactly a minor adjustment.
Xbox has collected a ridiculous number of gaming studios.
Now comes the harder part: figuring out what to do with all of them.
