Sofyan Amrabat has announced that he won’t play for Morocco while Mohamed Ouahbi remains head coach.
The 30-year-old midfielder made the announcement on Instagram, saying it was an extremely difficult decision but that he no longer felt able to represent the national team under the current coaching staff. He chose not to reveal the reasons behind his decision.
But this isn’t a retirement.
Amrabat made it clear that the door to Morocco is still open. If the coaching situation changes, a return remains possible. He also said he will continue supporting the national team as one of its biggest fans.
The timing makes the decision even more interesting. Morocco is about to start its 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, with Gabon on September 25 and Lesotho on September 29.
Amrabat has been one of Morocco’s key players since the 2022 World Cup run, when the Atlas Lions made history by reaching the semi-finals.
Now, Morocco will have to move forward without him ,at least for as long as Ouahbi remains in charge.
So… was Amrabat right to take a stand, or should he have stayed with the team?
