The slick bun, barely-there makeup and neutral wardrobe had a good run. But according to Vogue, fashion is ready for something a lot messier.
For the past few years, the “clean girl” aesthetic basically ruled the internet.
Think: slicked-back hair, glowy skin, tiny gold jewelry, beige outfits, minimal makeup and looking effortlessly put together , even if it took 45 minutes to look “effortless.”
But now?
Fashion is getting tired of being so well-behaved.
Vogue’s latest trend forecast for Spring/Summer 2027 points toward a much more expressive direction, with clashing colours, mixed prints, DIY styling, sheer pieces, exaggerated silhouettes and playful accessories replacing some of that polished minimalism.
One of the trends Vogue calls “Messy Girl Summer” is basically the opposite of clean-girl perfection ,think more personality, more chaos and less worrying about whether everything matches.
And honestly, the signs were already everywhere.
Olivia Rodrigo and Charli XCX have been pushing more deliberately messy, playful styling, while maximalist accessories, charms, statement jewellery and experimental beauty have been making their way back into the fashion conversation.
Maybe.
The new mood seems less about looking perfect and more about looking like yourself.
Basically, fashion is going from:
“Does this match?”
to
“Who cares?”
And Gen Z might be very ready for it.
