Stranger Than Heaven Just Dropped an Hour of Gameplay… And It Doesn’t Play Like Yakuza at All

When RGG Studio revealed Stranger Than Heaven…

Most people expected another Yakuza.

They were wrong.

And this new gameplay showcase proves it.

During a live presentation, the developers unveiled nearly an hour of gameplay, giving fans their clearest look yet at exploration, combat and the game’s unique mechanics before its launch on January 15, 2027 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

The biggest surprise?

The combat system.

Instead of the classic button-mashing style from Like a Dragon, each side of your character’s body is controlled independently. Your left and right arms—and even your legs—can attack, block and counter separately, creating fights that feel more like choreographed martial arts than traditional action games. It looks challenging…

But incredibly rewarding once you master it.

And combat is only half the experience.

The game follows Makoto Daito across 50 years of history, taking players through multiple Japanese cities and eras. Along the way, you’ll explore lively streets, build relationships, compose music by recording everyday sounds, and uncover a story that blends crime, drama and personal ambition.

Visually…

It’s one of RGG Studio’s most ambitious projects ever.

The environments are packed with detail, character animations are more cinematic than ever, and every city feels alive with side activities, mini-games and unexpected encounters.

After years of perfecting the Yakuza/Like a Dragon formula…

RGG Studio finally seems ready to take a real risk.

The real question is…

Will Stranger Than Heaven become the studio’s next masterpiece… or is its bold new combat system too different for longtime fans?
