A luxury hotel room in Casablanca…
For less than 1,000 dirhams?
Just a few months ago…
That sounded impossible.
Today, it’s becoming the new reality.
Faced with a dramatic drop in summer demand, several premium five-star hotels have cut their room rates by almost half. Properties that usually charge 1,800 to 2,200 MAD per night are now offering rooms below 1,000 MAD just to avoid leaving them empty.
But not everyone is celebrating.
Many three- and four-star hotels say this pricing war is forcing them to lower their own rates, squeezing profits across the entire market. They fear that constant discounts could weaken Casablanca’s image as a luxury destination.
Others disagree.
The president of Morocco’s National Hotel Industry Federation argues that this is simply supply and demand at work. According to him, an empty room generates no revenue at all, so lowering prices is better than leaving hotels half-empty—as long as service quality doesn’t suffer.
And that’s the real concern.
The biggest threat isn’t cheaper rooms…
It’s hotels cutting staff or reducing services to compensate for lower prices, which could damage the city’s reputation in the long run.
Behind the discounts lies an even bigger issue.
Every summer, Casablanca loses much of its business tourism, while many travelers head to beach destinations instead. Hoteliers also point to the lack of major festivals, international conferences and large cultural events capable of attracting visitors during the quieter months. These structural problems had already been worrying the sector before the current price war.
So while travelers can now book luxury hotels at some of the lowest prices seen in years…
The industry is asking a much bigger question.
Is this a smart strategy to keep hotels alive during the summer… or a race to the bottom that could hurt Casablanca’s luxury tourism for years to come?
