The PS6 Controller Could Finally Kill Stick Drift… Thanks to Magnets

If you’ve owned a PlayStation controller…

 

There’s a good chance you’ve experienced stick drift.

 

You’re not touching the joystick…

 

Yet your character keeps walking, your camera slowly turns, or your aim drifts on its own.

 

It’s one of the biggest complaints about modern controllers.

 

And Sony may finally have a solution.

 

According to a newly published Sony patent, the future PlayStation 6 controller could replace the traditional analog sticks with magnetic sensors, likely based on TMR (Tunnel Magnetoresistance) technology.

 

Unlike the potentiometers used in today’s DualSense controllers, these sensors work without physical contact. That means there’s virtually no internal friction, far less wear over time, and a much lower chance of developing stick drift.

 

Sony’s patent also describes a redesigned mechanism that keeps the stick centered with greater precision, making controls more stable even after years of use. The goal isn’t just durability…

 

It’s also better accuracy and smoother gameplay.

 

And Sony wouldn’t be the first.

 

Many third-party controllers already use Hall Effect or TMR magnetic sticks, and they’ve built a reputation for lasting much longer than traditional analog modules. TMR technology even promises higher precision and lower power consumption than standard Hall Effect designs.

 

But there’s one important catch…

 

It’s only a patent.

 

Companies file patents all the time, and many never become real products. So while this strongly suggests Sony is exploring magnetic sticks for the PS6, there’s no official confirmation they’ll be included in the final controller.

 

Still…

 

If Sony finally makes the switch, it could solve one of the most frustrating issues PlayStation players have dealt with for years.

 

The real question is…

 

Would magnetic sticks alone be enough to convince you to upgrade to a PS6… or are there bigger changes you’re still waiting for?
