PS5 Emulation Is Finally Becoming Reality… While the Console Is Still on Sale

For years, many gamers thought this moment was still far away.

Yet in 2026, the first PlayStation 5 emulators are already beginning to show real progress—even though Sony’s flagship console is still actively sold worldwide. It’s an unusually early milestone in the history of console emulation and one that could eventually reshape game preservation and PC gaming.

At the center of this progress is a project called SharpEMU.

Developed by an independent programmer known as iExplosiveRage, the emulator has reached a significant milestone by successfully running Dreaming Sarah, a commercial 2D game. While that’s far from running demanding AAA titles, it proves that real PS5 software can already execute on PC hardware. Another project, KytyPS5, has also managed to boot Silent Hill: The Short Message, although it currently stops at the loading screen. Meanwhile, Demon’s Souls Remake can now initialize before failing to fully load.

This may sound like a small achievement, but history suggests otherwise.

The PlayStation 4 emulator shadPS4 followed a very similar path. It began by displaying little more than corrupted graphics before gradually evolving into a mature emulator capable of running hundreds of PS4 games, including Bloodborne, one of Sony’s most demanding exclusives. Developers believe PS5 emulation could follow the same trajectory, although it will likely take several years before modern blockbusters become fully playable.

For Sony, however, this raises important questions.

One of PlayStation’s biggest strengths has always been its exclusive games. If those titles eventually become playable on powerful gaming PCs through emulation, it could weaken one of the company’s strongest selling points. That said, experts stress that emulators themselves are legal in many countries when developed independently. The legal issues arise when copyrighted BIOS files or illegally copied games are distributed or downloaded without authorization.

Despite the excitement, gamers shouldn’t expect miracles anytime soon.

Current PS5 emulators are extremely experimental, require advanced technical knowledge and cannot run modern 3D games at playable speeds. Most projects are still focused on basic functions such as loading system files, rendering graphics and booting simple software. In other words, we’re witnessing the birth of PS5 emulation—not its maturity.

Even so, the progress is remarkable.

Seeing a current-generation console being emulated before it reaches the end of its life cycle is almost unprecedented. Whether you’re interested in game preservation, PC gaming or simply the technical challenge, these first successful boots mark the beginning of what could become one of the most important emulation projects of the next decade. Today it’s just loading screens and a small indie game. In a few years, it could be the entire PlayStation 5 library.
