League of Legends Classic Is Bringing Back the LoL of 2013

For millions of players…

This is more than just a game mode.

It’s a trip back to one of the most iconic eras in esports.

Riot Games has officially announced League of Legends Classic, a nostalgic version of the MOBA that recreates the gameplay experience of Season 3 (2013). The mode launches on July 29 and will be available directly from the current League of Legends client—no separate download required.

But this isn’t simply an old patch brought back online.

League Classic revives many of the mechanics that longtime players remember: the original runes and quintessences, the old mastery trees, classic Summoner Spells like Revive and Rally, and legendary champion versions that disappeared years ago after reworks. Riot has already confirmed the return of infamous builds such as AP Master Yi, pre-rework Sion, and items like Deathfire Grasp, all of which defined the chaotic meta of the early 2010s.

However, Riot doesn’t want League Classic to become a frozen museum piece.

Instead of permanently locking the game to 2013, the developers say the mode will evolve through community voting, inspired by the model used in Old School RuneScape. Players will be able to influence future updates, vote on which champions or mechanics should return, and potentially even bring back classic maps like Twisted Treeline if enough of the community supports the idea.

The announcement has generated enormous excitement—but also debate.

Many veteran players are thrilled to relive what they consider League’s « golden age. » Others argue that nostalgia may be hiding the reality of how unbalanced the game used to be. Early League was famous for overpowered champions, frustrating mechanics and far fewer quality-of-life features than today’s version. Some analysts even warn that players may quickly realize just how much the game has improved over the past decade.

For Riot, League Classic is also a strategic move.

After the success of projects like World of Warcraft Classic, the studio is betting that nostalgia can reconnect former players with League while introducing newer fans to one of the most influential eras in competitive gaming. Instead of replacing modern League, Classic will exist alongside it, giving players the choice between today’s polished experience and the fast, unpredictable gameplay that helped turn League of Legends into the world’s biggest esport.

Thirteen years later, Riot is proving that sometimes the best way to move forward is to look back. Whether League Classic becomes a long-term success or simply a nostalgic trip down memory lane, one thing is certain: millions of players are about to rediscover why they fell in love with League of Legends in the first place.
