Ghita Mezzour: « We Shouldn’t Blame Every Layoff on AI »

As artificial intelligence reshapes industries around the world…

Many companies are announcing hiring freezes and layoffs.

But according to Ghita Mezzour, Morocco’s former Minister of Digital Transition and now founder of DecisiveAI, it’s a mistake to assume AI is responsible for every job cut.

Speaking to Médias24, Mezzour explained that the global job market is going through a broader period of economic and technological transition.

While AI is changing the way businesses operate, she argues that many workforce reductions are also linked to slower economic growth, restructuring plans and changing business priorities—not just automation.

Recent data illustrates that nuance.

A Médias24 survey found that:

• 9.5% of companies are considering layoffs in certain departments.

• 28.1% expect to reduce hiring.

• 15.9% say some positions have already been replaced or transformed by AI.

For Mezzour, the challenge isn’t to fear AI…

It’s to learn how to use it.

She believes Moroccan businesses need to accelerate AI adoption while investing in employee training, helping workers develop new skills instead of viewing the technology solely as a threat.

This reflects a wider global debate.

While AI is automating repetitive tasks, it is also creating demand for new roles in areas such as AI engineering, cybersecurity, data analysis, prompt engineering and digital transformation.

History suggests that technological revolutions tend to reshape jobs more than eliminate work altogether.

For Morocco, Mezzour believes the priority is clear:

Companies that successfully combine human expertise with artificial intelligence will be better positioned to compete in the years ahead.

AI is transforming the workplace—but, according to Ghita Mezzour, today’s wave of layoffs has many causes. The real challenge isn’t replacing people with AI… it’s helping people work alongside it.
