Matt Damon Read Christopher Nolan’s Script… And Had One Thought: « I Don’t Know How We’re Going to Pull This Off. »

Even Matt Damon was left speechless.

After reading the script for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming epic The Odyssey, the Oscar-winning actor admitted his first reaction was simple:

« I read the script and thought… I don’t know how we’re going to do this. »

And that’s saying something.

Damon has starred in massive productions like The Bourne Identity, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer.

Yet he describes The Odyssey as one of the most ambitious films he’s ever worked on, both technically and artistically.

──────────

Why?

Because Christopher Nolan isn’t just adapting Homer’s legendary poem.

He’s bringing to life mythical creatures, gigantic sea voyages, epic battles and philosophical themes—all while shooting the film almost entirely with IMAX cameras and relying heavily on practical effects rather than CGI.

To become Odysseus, Damon underwent an extraordinary physical transformation.

At 55 years old, he adopted an intense training program, lost significant weight and completely changed his diet.

He even eliminated gluten, revealing later that the change unexpectedly improved his health after years of undiagnosed food sensitivities.

Filming itself pushed the cast to their limits.

Production took place across Morocco, Greece, Scotland, Iceland, Italy and other demanding locations.

Damon revealed that the team often survived on just a few hours of sleep while shooting in harsh environments, describing the experience as more of an expedition than a traditional movie production.

The scale of the project is reflected in its cast.

Alongside Matt Damon, the film features Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron and Lupita Nyong’o, making it one of the most star-studded ensembles Christopher Nolan has ever assembled.

For Nolan, the challenge goes beyond spectacle.

The director has explained that adapting The Odyssey means reimagining one of the oldest stories in human history for modern audiences, while remaining faithful to the spirit of Homer’s epic.

If Matt Damon couldn’t imagine how Christopher Nolan would pull it off after reading the script… imagine what audiences will feel when they finally see it on the big screen.
