Moroccans Abroad Sent Billions Home… Now Morocco Wants Them to Build the Country Too

business

For decades…

Moroccans living abroad have been one of the Kingdom’s biggest economic strengths.

Every year, they send billions of dirhams back home, supporting families and boosting the national economy.

But today…

Morocco wants to go one step further.

The objective is no longer just remittances.

It’s investment.

According to experts and policymakers, the next challenge is transforming the savings of the Moroccan diaspora into productive investments that create businesses, jobs and regional development across the country.

The numbers are already impressive.

Money transfers from Moroccans abroad exceeded 122 billion dirhams in 2025, while during the first four months of 2026, remittances reached nearly 40 billion dirhams, almost 10% higher than the same period last year.

These transfers remain one of Morocco’s largest sources of foreign currency.

But experts believe the real potential goes much further.

Driss El Yazami, President of the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), argues that Morocco should develop new financial tools—such as diaspora bonds, dedicated investment funds and stronger partnerships with local regions—to encourage Moroccans abroad to finance long-term projects instead of limiting their contribution to family remittances.

Why is this so important?

Because investment creates lasting economic value.

A transfer helps families meet immediate needs.

An investment can finance a company…

Create permanent jobs…

Support innovation…

And stimulate development in regions that need it most.

The government has already made this a national priority.

Through initiatives linked to the Morocco Now strategy and the new Investment Charter, authorities are working to simplify administrative procedures, improve support for investors and encourage members of the diaspora to launch projects in sectors such as industry, technology, renewable energy, tourism and agriculture.

Today…

More than 5 million Moroccans live outside the Kingdom.

For Morocco, they are no longer seen only as citizens living abroad…

But as entrepreneurs, investors and strategic partners capable of accelerating the country’s economic transformation.

Morocco’s greatest resource may not only be the money its diaspora sends home… but the businesses, innovation and opportunities they could help build for generations to come.
