PlayStation Plus Is Getting More Expensive Again, and Players Are Starting to Push Back

business

Bad news for PlayStation players.

Sony has officially announced another round of price increases for PlayStation Plus in several regions around the world.

And in some cases, the hike exceeds 20%.

The biggest shock concerns the Premium tier.

In Europe, the annual subscription could now approach €180 per year, or roughly $200.

For many players, that is becoming harder and harder to justify.

The timing couldn’t be worse.

Because 2026 is already shaping up to be one of the most expensive years in gaming history.

Between:

GTA VI,
the Nintendo Switch 2,
$80–$90 AAA games,
DLCs,
battle passes,
and now a more expensive PlayStation Plus,

some players estimate they could spend well over $500 to $1,000 on gaming this year alone.

Online reactions were immediate.

Across Reddit and gaming forums, many subscribers questioned whether the service still delivers enough value for its price.

One user calculated that their gaming subscriptions now cost more annually than all of their streaming services combined.

Another announced they had cancelled automatic renewal after seeing prices climb repeatedly over the past few years.

Sony argues that the increase reflects investments in:

cloud gaming,
service improvements,
and a growing game catalog.

But critics aren’t convinced.

Many players say what they really want is:

more major releases,
more exclusives,
and stronger day-one content.

The comparison with Xbox Game Pass is also returning.

Many gamers believe Microsoft’s subscription currently offers a stronger value proposition, particularly because of its first-day releases.

And the debate goes beyond PlayStation itself.

For years, subscriptions were marketed as a way to make gaming more affordable.

Today, some players feel the industry is starting to resemble streaming platforms:

one subscription here,
another there,
and a monthly bill that keeps growing every year.

One thing is becoming clear.

As GTA VI approaches, the Switch 2 gains momentum, and gaming costs continue to rise,

2026 may become the year when players stop asking what they want to play

and start asking what they can actually afford to play.
