In the world of video games, some projects completely break away from the usual formula. And that’s exactly the case with Chants of Sennaar, an indie game that has been generating a lot of discussion in gamer communities on Reddit and specialized forums.

Released in 2023 by the French studio Rundisc, the game introduces a very original concept inspired by the myth of the Tower of Babel. Players take on the role of a character exploring a massive tower inhabited by several different civilizations. The problem is that each group speaks a completely different and incomprehensible language.

Unlike traditional RPGs, there are no weapons or combat systems here. The core gameplay revolves around linguistics and logic. Players must observe symbols, analyze conversations, study the context of actions, and gradually decipher unknown languages.

For example, if a character points at a door while showing a symbol and then opens it, players might deduce that the symbol could mean “open” or “door.” Over time, a translation system begins to form inside the in-game notebook.

This concept has been extremely well received by players. On Steam, the game holds more than 95% positive reviews, making it one of the highest-rated indie games in recent years.

On Reddit, one player explained that the game feels like “becoming a real archaeologist of languages,” while another said solving the symbols gives the same satisfaction as completing a complex puzzle.

The visual style also stands out. The game features an art direction inspired by Moebius and European graphic novels, with bold colors and minimalist environments.

But what truly makes the game unique is its message: instead of fighting other civilizations, players must understand their language to restore communication between cultures.

It’s a simple idea, but one that completely transforms the gaming experience.

And for many players, Chants of Sennaar proves that indie games can still surprise the gaming industry with truly original ideas.
